The Need

Families and individuals today are subjected to many high stress situations which can negatively impact their lives and their relationships with others.  Alcohol and drug abuse continue to destroy lives and families.  Feelings of isolation and depression, especially among our youth, are all too common.  These problems cut across all economic, social, educational, racial, and cultural lines.  Communities must find ways to combat the destructive influences which pervade our society and provide opportunities for positive growth and development. It is with this awareness and sense of responsibility that West Houston Community Center was established.

We now host 15 AA meetings each week 7 days each week helping hundreds of folks be faithful to their commitment to sobriety and we are preparing to start two new programs within the next few weeks. We now host 42 hours of Palmer Drug Abuse Programs (PDAP) for young and older youth 6 days each week and 10 hours of parent/child and multi-family programming each week as well. We have added a new program dealing with domestic abuse group counseling and meetings (Cease Addiction Now) and a Cocaine Anonymous meeting each week. The programs developed by our constituent Family Point Resources that operate from our facility have increased now to include three sports programs year around, and the number of at risk children involved in sports teams and after school programs now numbers in the hundreds.  Mosaic Theater Company, in addition to their usual school year programs in the neighborhood elementary schools, is putting on theater productions involving the neighborhood kids utilizing the facility auditorium and this summer is conducting three weeks of theater camp here. In addition to all of these programs, Young Life (West Houston) meets here one night a week during the school year. We are in discussions with Memorial Assistance Ministries to hold English as a second language classes beginning in the fall of 2010.  All of these programs have grown in terms of numbers of activities and participants whose lives have been impacted and reactions from participants and program leaders reassure us that this building plays a vital role in the welfare of the community.
